Universal Account Number Registration

 

The UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) subscriber. It allows subscribers to link multiple PF accounts to a common account. If they switch jobs, the new EPF account is tagged to the UAN. This gives them control of their PF account in matters related to balance transfers, online passbook download, credit alerts and updation of profile or data.

Allotment

The EPFO allots employers the universal account numbers for all their employees. The employer then passes on the number to its employees.

KYC procedure

The employees need to provide their KYC (know your customer) details to the employer, who updates them online on the EPFO website. The employer has to digitally verify the KYC details of the employees.

UAN portal

The employees need to log on to http:uanmembers.epfoservices.in and enter the UAN, mobile number and member ID under the tab `Activate your UAN based registration'.

PIN

An authorisation PIN is then sent to the employee's mobile phone.

Password

After submitting the PIN, the employ ee needs to submit personal details and create a password. The UAN serves as the user name.

Points to note

Even after the UAN is allotted, member IDs will exist, but each member ID can be linked to the UAN.

The password should be alpha-numeric, and have at least one special character.

It should have 8-25 characters.

Employers may upload KYC documents without digital signatures, but at the time of approval of such documents, digital signatures are mandatory.
