Health cover for Senior Citizens

The Department of Financial Services, a part of the Ministry of Finance, has proposed a special health insurance scheme for senior citizens.

Modelled on the lines of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Bima Yojana, the government is considering providing a health insurance cover to those above 60.

The scheme would provide a `1 lakh cashless cover annually. While a regular health scheme covers most hospitalisation expenses, this scheme will only cover costs incurred for secondary and tertiary care. Secondary care is where a patient is referred to a specialist hospital by a primary health centre. Tertiary includes specialised consultative care on reference from primary and secondary centres. The ministry is also considering the option of providing the same cover on a family floater basis.

The product has not been priced yet. However, the government plans to subsidise 90% of the premium for those seniors who fall below the poverty line.
