What is divestment?





Usually this term refers to a process through which the government sells off part of its stake in a company in which it holds a majority stake. At times, the process also could include selling off government's entire stake or a residual minority stake to mainly non-government entities like public at large, foreign and domestic institutions like FIIs, mutual funds insurance companies and banks. In India, since the government holds large stakes in several companies and banks, usually it divests part of its stakes in some of the companies each year to meet its budgetary needs. Although divestment process has brought in riches to non-government shareholders, often this has been met with opposition from the labour unions.
